Gen Zers and Cancel Culture

 
Gen Zers can be quick to react when they find someone has not been truthful or authentic....

“Canceling,” originally a form of shunning in which fans dump a celebrity, is a common response to an individual  or product that abuses trust, sometimes with significant emotional and financial impact on the target....
Cancel culture, or callout culture, is a new way for online communities to call out hypocrisy and to hold individuals and groups accountable for their behavior. It allows individuals to exercise personal agency in the online world, where so much power is in the hands of the platform providers....
Postmillennials who defend cancel culture and deplatforming view it not as a personal weapon but as a cultural and political tool...This is about the power of collective voice to challenge and drown out what they perceive as prejudice in favor of showing empathy and support for vulnerable communities.  (pp 85-87)
